I recently purchased a GoPro Hero 3 Silver and I was anxious to try it out. I thought it may be cool to give readers a sort of “photographer’s-eyed view” of what it’s like to shoot on the floor of one of these games. And yes, I was teased by my peers for looking slightly ridiculous.

There were a few kinks to work out that I didn’t foresee. Due to the PocketWizards (the devices attached to the top of the camera which triggers flashes), I had to wear the camera off the side of my head a bit. This prevented the camera from recording a completely accurate account of what I was seeing (camera was off to the left). It also made the footage crooked (well, either that or I have a crooked head). I also realized I needed to point the camera down more as I tend to look up more and the camera is mounted high and above my eyes. In terms of quality, I thought the video footage was great. Still photos could use some work. I think the players and I both moved too much to get a real nice shot of anything.
I’m really looking forward to other locations I can mount it and events I can record. I think the fun part of the video is seeing how difficult it can be to switch between cameras because of how fast the direction of play can change. Also, you can tell that some shots are missed because referees can get in the way! Getting a good spot on the floor and hoping the referee doesn’t favor a spot right in front of you is half the battle!
Below are additional images I shot with my regular cameras (none are from the GoPro).
