2013 UA Sorority Bid Day

Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, thousands of members of University of Arkansas sororities gathered at the Greek Theater to invite new members into their houses.  Parice Bowser, director of Greek Life at the University of Arkansas, said amongst the 10 different Panhellenic sorority houses, 1,218 bids to join went out on Sunday.

For those not familiar with Greek Life, Bid Day is the finale to recruitment week where sororities extend invitations to potential new members. Recruitment began Aug. 18 for the houses on campus. Potential new members met the girls in the different houses, learned about philanthropies, received house tours and participated in preference night. I have never seen a Bid Day as big as this, so it was a fun and exciting atmosphere to be around. Houses were decorated to welcome new members and bid day parties would follow (featuring professional DJs at these parties by the way).

I'm originally from Colorado and I was introduced to photojournalism in high school while working on the school's yearbook. In 2011, I graduated from Colorado State University with degrees in journalism and art. This is my first “real-world” job, but while in college I worked for CSU's daily student newspaper and I interned for Denver-based Westword, the Colorado Eagles (ACHL hockey team) and Johnson and Wales University. I cherish analog photography and I like to shoot on a medium-format Mamyia RB67 whenever I can. While I'm not at work, I enjoy doing all sorts of physical activities, especially mud runs and Crossfit, and I love to bake desserts (which are usually consumed by my coworkers).
