Tucks Chapel training burn

The Avoca Fire Department conducted training burns in Tuck’s Chapel, near Avoca, on Sunday November 10, 2013 before ultimately letting the historic building burn to the ground.

For me, photographing training or demolition burns is usually a lot of fun. Lets face it, when no one gets hurt or loses their home watching a building burn to the ground is quite an experience. Today, however, was a more somber occasion.

Tucks Chapel was constructed in 1871, and remained in use until a severe fire on September 27 damaged the structure beyond repair. Some of the parishioners came out to watch and document the occasion with their own cameras, and I overheard people sharing their memories. For people who went to church, got married, and held funerals for loved ones in the chapel it must have been a sad day indeed.
