Holi Celebration 2014

The Friends of India student group and the Hindu Student Association at the University of Arkansas hosted their Holi celebration at Wilson Park in Fayetteville on Saturday. Holi is celebrated today, March 17, 2014.

This is my third year the the Holi celebration. The first year I participated which allowed me to know, from then on, if I ever bring a camera or go to the event for work, I need to cover myself and my gear.

The first year, as a participant, was SO MUCH FUN!

The second year, I shot if for work and still had a good time. I covered myself and my gear (Kind of had to since it was drizzling anyway), but still got a little color because … well, you have to get at least a LITTLE color while you’re there (“Happy Holi!”).

This year, however, was much more chaotic. I knew the covers over my cameras wouldn’t keep them in pristine condition, but I really didn’t help that people this year were really letting me have it. I know accidents happen and whatnot, but I think common sense would encourage most people to refrain from attacking the “camera lady” who is obviously decked out in an attempt to not get so colorized. This year, I had several people throw color directly at me. DIRECTLY. AT. MY LENS!!! I know there are inherent risks going into a mob of people throwing colored powder around, but c’mon people, have a little respect. Please?!

Please don’t do this to me.

About

I'm originally from Colorado and I was introduced to photojournalism in high school while working on the school's yearbook. In 2011, I graduated from Colorado State University with degrees in journalism and art. This is my first “real-world” job, but while in college I worked for CSU's daily student newspaper and I interned for Denver-based Westword, the Colorado Eagles (ACHL hockey team) and Johnson and Wales University. I cherish analog photography and I like to shoot on a medium-format Mamyia RB67 whenever I can. While I'm not at work, I enjoy doing all sorts of physical activities, especially mud runs and Crossfit, and I love to bake desserts (which are usually consumed by my coworkers).
