First Same-Sex Marriage in Arkansas

On Saturday I drove to Eureka Springs, which has the only├é┬ácourthouse in Arkansas that is open on Saturday to issue marriage licenses. A line began to develop, with one couple have slept in their car overnight. What made this so different is that the couples were mostly same-sex couples. Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza stuck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriages on Friday.

It didn’t go smoothly. The first county clerk who arrived said she would not issue same-sex marriage licenses without approval from her boss. A short time after the doors opened, the office closed. In a shift though, another county clerk arrived and re-opened the office and began issuing the the marriage licenses. Kristin Seaton and Jennifer Rambo became the first same-sex couple to receive a marriage license in the state of Arkansas. They were quickly married by an officiate on the courthouse steps. By 1 p.m. that afternoon, the usual closing time for the county clerk’s office on Saturday, 15 same-sex marriage certificates were issued.

Many waiting in line were angry and disappointed they didn’t receive their marriage licenses. A few heterosexual couples were also left out from getting their marriage licenses. Many of the same-sex couple were worried a court ordered stay will prevent more being issued on Monday.

Here are some images from that morning.
