2013 Har-Ber High School graduation

Har-Ber High School in Springdale held its commencement exercises Saturday, May 18, 2013, for the class of 2013 in Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.

Jim Rollins, the 31-year superintendent of Springdale Public Schools, walked through the group of graduating seniors before the start of Har-Ber’s commencement. He shook the hands of and spoke to countless students and seemed genuinely glad to be there and be talking to them. To be honest, I’ve never seen a superintendent do this and loved the photographs that I was able to make from it. I asked him about his experience doing that and he said, “I can’t imagine being a superintendent and not doing that,”

2013 Springdale High School graduation

Springdale High School held its 101st commencement Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.

Finding something different, something that I have not seen before at a high school graduation is a challenge, but it’s one that I enjoy. With so many schools that we cover having their graduations in Fayetteville, I get plenty of shots at it, too. I really like the photograph of the student looking at his cellphone in the dark for just that reason. It’s something that I haven’t seen before and technology was a topic brought up often for this class by the speakers during the ceremony. Once I had that one in the bag, I was relaxed.

North Little Rock wins 7A softball championship

The North Little Rock Charging Wildcats defeated the Rogers Lady Mountaineers with a 10-0 shutout Saturday afternoon at Bogle Park in Fayetteville to win the 2013 class 7A state softball title.

Fayetteville wins 7A baseball title over Rogers

Fayetteville High School won its seventh baseball title — the sixth for coach Vance Arnold — with a 6-3 win over Rogers High School Friday, May 17, 2013, at Baum Stadium.

Most believed that Fayetteville, which has only lost two games all year and none inside the state of Arkansas, would win the title this season, but it took some relief pitching from junior Kyle Pate and some hitting to defeat the Mounties.

Rogers Heritage 2013 Graduation

With the chaos of Rogers’ graduation being let out and the different way the kids were organized for RHHS’ graduation, I felt I little backwards. Alas, graduates are always fixing each others’ hats and finding ways to pass the time before the ceremony. Heritage’s set up was different than Rogers because the kids had to line up in a certain order in a specific group. The bright side is that each teacher of staff member that was in charge of each group knew exactly how many students they were in charge of and thus, whether or not anyone was missing. Congrats to the Class of 2013 War Eagles!

Rogers High School 2013 Graduation

Another year, another graduating class! Congrats to the graduates of 2013! I like to spend time in the east tunnel before the graduates walk in, partially because it’s air conditioned, but also because the kids are most anxious in these moments before the ceremony begin. Many ask me repeatedly, “what time is it?” while others hoot and holler at each other and get riled up. Quite the experience many miss, so I like shooting there (despite the horrid lighting conditions).

Fayetteville High School graduation

Fayetteville High School held its commencement exercises Thursday, May 16, 2013, in Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.

After covering 20 graduations at Fayetteville High, this year was a bit different, as my girlfriend’s son, Tad, graduated. It was fun to see how excited he was to be at an event that I have covered for so many years.

Northwest Arkansas Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony

Law enforcement representatives from around Northwest Arkansas came to the Springdale Police Department Wednesday, May, 15, 2013 for the Northwest Arkansas Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony. This ceremony is in conjunction with Peace Officers Memorial Day which is held annually in the United States on May 15 in honor of federal, state and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

I think that we are lucky to live in a part of the country that doesn’t experience the kind of violence and crime that other areas experience. That’s not to say it is completely without danger either. That is evident when you read the names on the memorials in front of the local police departments. Many times police officers go to work knowing that they are going to encounter people who really don’t like them. Maybe even want to hurt them. Those officers go anyway and do the best they can to keep the public safe. I am thankful they are there and hope no new names get added to the list.

University of Arkansas graduation

The University of Arkansas held its annual commencement exercises for an approximate 3,500 students Saturday, May 11, 2013, in Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. The university bestowed honorary degrees upon businessman and philanthropist Lee Bodenhamer and Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli during the ceremony.

Up early for the ceremony, I enjoyed some very pretty light as the ceremony began before heading inside to hear Bodenhamer and Martinelli speak.

Moving Up at FHS

Fayetteville High School’s annual Moving Up ceremony celebrates the accomplishments of the student body, clubs, activities, sports and academic teams before the senior class is given the opportunity to thank and say good-bye to their teachers.

It’s funny to watch all of the seniors who on the outset think everything that adults ask them to do must be stupid and worth of skipping get caught up in the moments of a very good and emotionally charged event. This is a wonderful tradition that was recently started at FHS, and I always enjoy shooting it.
